Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease consists of a variety of conditions. These include endometriosis, salpingitis, tubo-ovarian abscess, and pelvic peritonitis. PID is a bacterial infection that occurs whenever the uterus is traumatized and often associated with sexually transmitted diseases. Can present with bleeding, discharge, or burning during urination. Can cause infertility and chronic pain. Can occur with an unknown cause and some athletes may tolerate the pain for several weeks before seeing a physician.
Signs & Symptoms
- Often asymptomatic
- Vaginal discharge or bleeding
- Burning on urination
- Moderate to severe abdominal or pelvic pain
- Painful intercourse
- Painful menstruation
- Constitutional symptoms
Risk Factors
- Early age of first intercourse
- Number of sexual partners

- Human papillomavirus
